Childe Harold on the Move?

The Dupont Current is reporting that high rent may force the 40-year-old Childe Harold Restaurant and Saloon to move to a new location.

The article quotes owner Hossein Shirvani as saying that the rent and property taxes for the four-level space at 1610 20th St. NW. have gotten too high.

But fans of the old saloon shouldn't panic yet. The story also quotes Shirvani as saying, "The Childe Harold will stay in the area." He told The Current that he is considering several spaces nearby, including the building he owns next door at 1608 20th St. NW.

It may not be cause for panic, but it is kind of sad... the Childe, in its current spot, is a genuine, living piece of DC history.

I am very sad that the Childe
Harold is closing, at least at
its current location. My husband
and I had one of our first dates
there almost 11 years ago. And
over the years we have continued
to go there for good meals and to
remember with great nostalgia
that we started falling in love
years ago as we dined at the Child
Harold. I also remember in the 1970s
going there to hear live jazz, including the famous Mose Allison
in the days when Childe Harold still
had live music on weekends upstairs.
Such wonderful memories. I hope the
owner will try to relocate in DC
not far from the Dupont Circle area.

Thanks for sharing your memories!

The building is for lease according to the sign out front. All that is needed is a new caring and energetic owner for the business to host a successful bar/retaurant at this historic location.
