Metrocurean Radar: Around 14th Street

Welcome to the Metrocurean Radar, an occasional look at the food and restaurant blips showing up on my radar. This first installment takes a look at the buzz of activity around the Logan/U Street/Shaw neighborhoods.

First up, the 14&U Farmers Market kicks off its season on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Look for vendors (and reportedly lots of strawberries!) outside the Reeves Center. The producer-only market runs through Nov. 17.

Down 14th Street in the Matrix condo building, Artfully Chocolate and Kingsbury Chocolates are pairing up to open a chocolate shop later this summer. The shop will feature Kingsbury's housemade chocolates (and hopefully their fleur de sel caramels, which I love). According to the Washington Business Journal, the shop will also serve cocoa drinks.

There's a new liquor license application in the window at 1345 S St. NW, the former home of Las Marias, right off 14th Street. Wisdom is the name on the application, which also mentions a sidewalk cafe and DJ music.

According to my favorite Shaw blogger, Remaking Le Slum Historique, a new restaurant called Nima's is headed to 1230 Ninth St. NW. The new spot will feature French and Italian food, according to its license application. The blog also has some scoop on Veranda, a Mediterranean restaurant opening soon at 11th and P streets.

Heading north on 14th Street, The Heights, the newest sibling of Logan Tavern, Grillfish and Merkado, is expected to open in June.

And add to this list a new sushi spot in the Ellington at 1301 U St., where Destination U used to be!

Speaking of which, does anybody know what happened to 100% Mexico (besides the crazy high rent!)? I totally missed that it closed and walked past the other day totally in shock. I loved those guys!
