Product Watch: Siggi's Orange Ginger Skyr

Orange and ginger make a delightful combination in Siggi's skyr

Longtime readers of this site may remember the first time I waxed poetic about skyr. For the uninitiated, it's a traditional Icelandic product that's a lot like yogurt. It's naturally high in protein and fat free — hell, I'd call it health food — but the consistency is rich, creamy and totally worthy of dessert. Even better, it lacks that creepy gelatinous texture I associate with fat-free yogurt.

An Icelandic brand of skyr appeared in DC-area Whole Foods stores more than two years ago. Now comes Siggi's, an Icelandic-style yogurt made in New York by Iceland native Siggi Hilmarsson. (Here's his story, courtesy The Amateur Gourmet.)

I first read about Siggi's in Gourmet a few months ago and finally noticed it on the shelves of the P Street Whole Foods last week. I picked up the orange and ginger flavor and I'm hooked. The orange is subtle, not juicy, and there are actual bits of candied ginger throughout, which makes this ginger lover pleased as punch. There's also plain, blueberry and pomegranate-passion fruit.

What's more, the skyr is made with milk from grass-fed cows — sans growth hormones — and is sweetened with agave nectar. All the more reason to eat up.

Have you tried Old Chatham's sheep's milk yogurt? It's available at Whole Foods and their ginger flavor is awesome. Will have to look for this next!

Is that the one with the green label and the little sheep? If so, I love it, but I haven't had the ginger. Will be on the lookout!

Yep, green label, black sheep. It's not low fat, but so good...
