I'll also keep it local and go with Loudoun Valley's Vin de Pomme. I tasted this recently and was pleasantly surprised that the tartness of the granny smith apples shined. A perfect wine to counteract the District's humidity.

Well...depends on what I'm in the mood for. The rose fans certainly have a point, and I'm particularly fond of those from Bandol.

If I want a traditional-ish white, one of my favorites is chardonel (Augusta's is particularly good, has a honeydew nose that screams "refreshing."), but sometimes a Sauterns is just the ticket. 2005 Château Roûmieu-Lacoste Haut Barsac is all pink grapefruit and honey with just the right amount of sweetness.

I was going to say Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, like Nobilo, Kim Crawford, or Monkey Bay; but someone above mentioned Vinho Verde(Monica Fulvio gets props). I would go with Vinho Verde, its like Mike's Hard Lemonade for adults.

Frei Brothers 2007 Chardonnay. Or really, anything from the Russian River Valley that year. It is perfectly buttery, not overly citrusy, it tastes EXACTLY like a sunset.

Gurrutxaga Txakoli Rose (I know, it's a mouthful). It's a rose from the San Sebastian region of Spain, and it's perfectly dry and slightly effervescent. Goes great with fish, or on its own!

A crisp, slightly sweet sparkling shiraz. Or a 48 hour chilled Port or Sherry. These will cool you to your core...a perfect supplement to a 70 degree and humid night.

For a hot summer night, I have to go with a good Pinot Grigio or Pinot Gris. Served well chilled, crisp, light and refreshing, there’s nothing better to relax with, in the heat of the summer. I tend to prefer the Italians more, but that’s probably because I had a great time one hot summer in Italy where I drank a lot of them. Of course, they tend to be a little more expensive the our native Pinot Gris, but the flavor combined with the memories, make it worthwhile.

Everday drinking has to be Sonoma Cutrer Chardonnay. Beautiful balance and at a price to quality point that really makes it sing...
I would also suggest a rose from Domaine Lafond. Very nice.

I'm bidding a reluctant adieu to summer on this first day of fall and looking back with fond memories on one of the season's highlights — our Summer Salt Fest at the Gordy's Pickle Jar headquarters. Ever since opening Salt & Sundry three years ago, I've been dreaming of a down-home party that celebrates all things salty. With the perfect partners in crime, Sarah and Sheila of Gordy's, and my phenomenal team at Salt & Sundry, we hosted a gathering of good friends and toasted our shared love of salt. The feast included fried chicken, boiled peanuts ( made by my husband !), Rappahannock' s Olde Salt oysters, deviled eggs topped with Gordy's Sweet Pepper Relish, and probably the best fried pickles I've ever eaten (yes, I've eaten a lot) ... STYLE } Bar Styling Tips with Framebridge

  I've always been noncommittal when it come to putting anything on my walls. Art? Photos? Prints? But what if I change my mind? Add the hassle of framing something and voila, a growing pile of unframed prints and photos gathers dust on a shelf. So I much appreciated a recent gentle nudge from friends at  Framebridge , a DC-based company that's making it easier and less expensive to get those pretty-if-neglected pieces framed and on display. We hung out at my place, whipped up some Green Hat gin and tonics, and I shared tips for stocking and styling your bar at home. (Any old table will do!) Hello Cupcake Opens

Cupcakes await the first customers at Hello Cupcake For a sweet spot in this final week of August, head to Hello Cupcake , which opens at 10 a.m. today at 1351 Connecticut Ave. NW. I had the chance to sample a few flavors with owner Penny Karas. The fluffy icing on the peanut butter blossom (above) is seriously addictive, and the seasonal root beer flavor is a delightful surprise with spicy root beer cake topped with vanilla cream cheese frosting.
