About a year ago, my shop crew and I moved all of our inventory into a great big warehouse in DC's Eckington neighborhood. After six years of running a business with no office or space to collaborate with my team, the new project couldn't have come sooner. We revamped all 5,500 square feet from a dark and dreary cavern — complete with a dust-encased toy bat hanging from the covered skylight — to a light and airy headquarters and dubbed it The Sun Room. (Before pic down below!)

With plenty of space, it only made sense to share The Sun Room for private events. This week, we finally kicked things off with Sun Down at The Sun Room, a gathering of friends and event industry folks. Take a peek and contact us here if you're interested in booking the space!
There was a T magazine article last spring that really stuck with me examining why we're drawn to eating outside. Of the Victorian's penchant for picnicking, Tamar Adler wrote about "the pleasurable collision between human refinements and the places and energies in the natural world ..."

"Those overly decent people instinctively knew the frisson of performing petty formalities amid beetle and toad, and so they happily trudged in waistcoat and bustle through field and stream for lunch," Adler writes.

While happily trudging in a forgiving flowy dress rather than a waistcoat, I had a fun opportunity to pull together a picnic look for The Washington Post's Local Living section last week. For me it's all about bringing some elements of interior style out into the grass.

I've always been noncommittal when it come to putting anything on my walls. Art? Photos? Prints? But what if I change my mind? Add the hassle of framing something and voila, a growing pile of unframed prints and photos gathers dust on a shelf.

So I much appreciated a recent gentle nudge from friends at Framebridge, a DC-based company that's making it easier and less expensive to get those pretty-if-neglected pieces framed and on display.

We hung out at my place, whipped up some Green Hat gin and tonics, and I shared tips for stocking and styling your bar at home. (Any old table will do!) And yes, I actually put a nail in the wall and hung a print.

Head this way for my full interview with Framebridge. Cheers!
I had a blast hosting a Holiday Cocktail Lab recently at Rent the Runway's beautiful Georgetown shop. Getting to wear a fabulous Missoni for the evening was icing on the cake. Scroll on for a few photos, and of course, the recipes, including the classic Adonis, my spin on a Jack Rose, and a punch from my friend Dan Searing.
Where did October go? I was just beginning to embrace these crisp, cool days dotted with pumpkin sightings and now the calendar rolls over into November. But I'll be keeping the pumpkins around post jack o' lantern with favorite fall recipes from the archives (plus a few other goodies you should be making now):

I'm bidding a reluctant adieu to summer on this first day of fall and looking back with fond memories on one of the season's highlights — our Summer Salt Fest at the Gordy's Pickle Jar headquarters.

Ever since opening Salt & Sundry three years ago, I've been dreaming of a down-home party that celebrates all things salty. With the perfect partners in crime, Sarah and Sheila of Gordy's, and my phenomenal team at Salt & Sundry, we hosted a gathering of good friends and toasted our shared love of salt.

The feast included fried chicken, boiled peanuts (made by my husband!), Rappahannock's Olde Salt oysters, deviled eggs topped with Gordy's Sweet Pepper Relish, and probably the best fried pickles I've ever eaten (yes, I've eaten a lot) ... Gordy's Sweet Chips and Cajun Okra dipped in roasted garlic aioli. There was crisp Virginia rosé from Early Mountain Vineyards, local brews from 3 Stars and DC Brau, and a watermelon cooler that Sheila whipped up with Green Hat Gin.

As DJ Cassidy Karakorn spun tunes late into the night, out came the salted caramel gelato push-pops from our friends at Dolcezza. The push-pop, by the way, is the perfect mode to eat ice cream while dancing like a maniac. Guests went home with jars of sweet and spicy pickled watermelon rind the Gordy's team cooked up just for the party. Thinking we'll have to do it again next summer ...
Right about 4 p.m. most afternoons at Union Market, the ice cream procession starts. Shoppers casually stroll into Salt & Sundry toting tempting cones and thick milkshakes filled with flavors from our market neighbors Trickling Springs Creamery. I know I'm not the only one who often makes it to a point in the (late) afternoon only to realize that I've been chugging coffee without so much as a thought to hydration. On the hottest summer days, when I'm over-caffeinated and plenty parched, I crave this pleasantly tart thirst quencher from Rappahannock Oyster Bar. It's a grown-up — but still booze-free — take on a childhood favorite.
This simple stew, inspired by cioppino, is one of my favorite summer seafood recipes. It's a go-to on family beach trips, when I feel the need to pack in as much seafood as possible, as if I'll never have access to it again.

To the contrary, I eat seafood wherever I am, but there's something about the salty humid air of the coast that I swear makes it taste even better. And when you're city-bound, a bowl nearly conjures that same seaside vibe.

Many recipes for fish stew call for a long ingredient list of pricey seafood and homemade fish stock. But you can coax a lot of flavor out of a few ingredients in little time. And what seafood you toss in is really up to you. Crab legs, scallops and mussels are all great additions not included here. (We tossed in mussels last time, pictured above!)

Serve as a light supper with a salad and French bread, or as a first course for a dinner party.

Simple Seafood Stew
serves 6

1/4 cup olive oil
2 large onions, sliced
6 garlic cloves, smashed
1 serrano pepper, minced
5 cups tomatoes, chopped (You can also use canned diced tomatoes if needed.)
2 cups dry white wine
1 cup water
2 bay leaves
1 pound shrimp
3/4 pound squid, tentacles and bodies cleaned and sliced into 1/2-inch pieces
1 1/2 pounds halibut or other firm white fish, cut into 1-inch chunks
18 clams
fresh basil and parsley
salt and pepper to taste
lemon

Heat olive oil in a large heavy bottom pot over medium high heat. Add onion and cook 3-4 minutes. Add garlic and serrano pepper and cook 5 minutes. Add the wine and cook for about 3 minutes.

Add tomato, water and bay leaves, and simmer over low heat for 15 minutes. Season with salt to taste.

Turn heat up to medium high, add the squid and fish, stir and cook 3-4 minutes. Set the clams on top, cover and cook for about 5 minutes. Add the shrimp and cook another 3-5 minutes until the clams have opened and the shrimp are cooked through.

Adjust seasoning by adding salt and pepper to your liking. You can thin the stew with a little water if it's thicker than you want. Ladle into bowls, add torn basil leaves, parsley, lemon wedges and serve.Amandahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13181434730386662275noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14187127.post-60231298517585072212015-04-16T13:21:00.000-04:002015-04-16T13:27:40.537-04:00COOK } The Stars of Spring

DC is finally showing off her full spring glory, and the farmers markets are gearing up with appearances from the season's superstar vegetables and fruits.

This video from an appearance on News Channel 8's Let's Talk Live is a few years old, but I refer to it as "That time I chewed a pickled ramp through an entire live TV segment." So I figured it's worth recycling.

Give it a watch and read on for tasty ideas for how to best use spring's produce:

ASPARAGUS
The freshly picked tender spears of spring are a far cry from the woody stalks you find in the off season. Look for them to make their first appearance in the next few weeks at the markets.
Make: Asparagus Benedict on quinoa nettle cakes; Penne with asparagus, sage and peas; or simply grill it

RAMPS
Stinky, musky goodness is how I think of these wild onions.

MICRO MUSTARD GREENS
Endless Summer Harvest specializes in these adorable baby greens with a spicy kick.
Make: Pile them on a BLT in place of lettuce, or toss into a salad for extra flavor.

STINGING NETTLES
Don't touch them raw or you'll understand where the name comes from, but dunk them in boiling water and they turn into perfectly edible, nutritious greens.
Make: Spring lasagna with asparagus, peas and stinging nettles, Nettle soup

RHUBARB
Every spring I look forward to making tangy jam and a simple rhubarb crostata.
The cold shows no sign of surrender here in DC, and my kitchen pipes just burst. While we wait for water to return and snow to melt, I'm taking a cue from the folks celebrating Mardi Gras today and mixing an updated version of a New Orleans classic — the Hurricane.

Drawing from Salt & Sundry's bar section, I've subbed P&H Soda Co.'s delicious hibiscus syrup for the traditional passion fruit. Match that with Jack Rudy's grenadine and fresh citrus, and you have a little tropical escape in a glass.

For another accessible tropical escape, head to the wonderfully humid US Botanic Garden jungle (pictured below). It may be the best place to ride out the cold snap in DC. If only they had a tiki bar ...

Snow Day Hurricane
2 oz dark rum
1/2 oz fresh orange juice
3/4 oz fresh lime juice
1/2 oz P&H Soda Co. Hibiscus Syrup
1/4 oz Jack Rudy Cocktail Co. Grenadine

Shake and strain into a glass with ice. Garnish with fruit and a paper umbrella.
You've probably heard me say it before, but you can never go wrong gifting really good food. With that in mind, we've created three Valentine's gift boxes — the LOVE, LOCAL and LUSH — filled with fabulous cocktail/food items, available for preorder and pick up at Salt & Sundry.

Pictured above, the LOCAL box rounds up some of my favorite DC-made goodies, including Langdon Wood Barrel-Aged Maple Syrup, Gordy's Cherry Pepper Spread, Mango 'Chups and Capital Honey Co.'s raw urban honey.

After stocking their excellent cocktail mixers at Salt & Sundry for some time, I finally had the chance to meet the delightful creators of Bittermilk when they made the trip from SC to DC for Emporiyum.

They're one of those impressive pairs who make you wonder if they have more than 24 hours in the day. Between running a popular Charleston bar, raising kids and selling their growing Bittermilk line, husband-and-wife team Joe and MariElena Raya are still cooking up new flavors.

The latest is the Bittermilk No. 6 Oaxacan Old Fashioned. In the dead of winter, it delivers a welcome dose of spicy warmth.

Inspired by the flavors of Mexico and mezcal, this craft mixer blends dried Mexican chilies, cocoa nibs and spices. It's sweetened with raisins and — you know I love an NC connection — aged with cocoa husks from French Broad Chocolates in Asheville.

Mixing one up couldn't be easier, as Joe demonstrates below: Stir 1 part mixer with 4 parts mezcal and ice. Garnish with a lime twist. And warm up.
After the riotous bold colors of the holidays, I'm feeling drawn to a palette of pinks and purples — which sounds like a 6-year-old girl's favorite colors, but in dusty muted tones, the pair can be quite sophisticated. Here's a little winter eye candy to cut through the cold.

Not one for punitive New Year's resolutions, I finally got to snag one of Mason Dixie Biscuit Co.'s breakfast biscuits before opening Salt & Sundry this weekend at Union Market. The fluffy, crumbly biscuit topped with Benton's bacon, a runny egg and melted cheese is a breakfast I hope to repeat often in 2015.

I also hope to be writing a bit more here, as the dust settles from opening two shops in two years.

Wishing you a very happy new year!Amandahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13181434730386662275noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14187127.post-37881192682970771612014-11-28T21:00:00.002-05:002014-11-28T21:02:33.303-05:00SHOP } Small Business Saturday at Salt & Sundry

Back when I opened Salt & Sundry two years ago, I was extremely fortunate to find an incredible and talented team of women (and the occasional man!) to work with. One of those women is Mallory Shelter. While holding down a full-time job in PR, she works at the shop on weekends and last year, she launched her own jewelry company. She likes to stay busy.

On Nov. 29, we're throwing a trunk show and soirée featuring Mallory's gorgeous handmade pieces as part of American Express and Etsy's nationwide Small Business Saturday campaign. Working with local makers and designers is one of my favorite parts about owning a shop, and I'm excited to showcase Mallory's one-of-a-kind work.

The trunk show runs from 1-7 p.m. at Salt & Sundry Union Market, and from 4-7 p.m., we'll serve up snacks from Bayou Bakery, seasonal sips and tunes by DJ Shanti Shree.

Hope to see you there!

Stop reading if you're a friend or family member because you'll ruin your holiday gift surprise. ... For the rest of you, this spiced vodka infusion is a perfect DIY gift.

I fell for this during Salt & Sundry's most recent Drink Lab class, hosted with our Union Market neighbors Cordial Fine Wine & Spirits. Barman Dan Searing, who's graciously hosting the series, provided the recipe. Make a few batches and divide into small bottles. Or create a spice kit for your friends and give it with instructions and a bottle of good vodka. The infusion is delicious in cocktails or to spike hot cider.

Warm Spiced Cocktail Infusion
makes 1 750 ml bottle
adapted from Boyd & Blair Vodka

375 ml high-proof vodka, such as Boyd & Blair 151 from PA
1 whole nutmeg, crushed into several pieces
1 cinnamon stick
1 vanilla bean, split lengthwise
2 whole cloves
2 whole cardamom pods
4 black peppercorns
1 star anise
3 allspice berries
peel of 1 orange

Place the spices in a heavy sauce pan and toast over medium heat for several minutes. Put the orange peel and toasted spices into a mason jar, add the vodka, and seal tightly.

Store the jar in a cool, dark location, and shake daily for 7-10 days.

Once the spices have infused the vodka, strain contents with a mesh strainer and coffee filter into a clean bottle or jar. Mix with equal parts simple syrup in a bottle that will hold about 30 ounces or more.Amandahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13181434730386662275noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14187127.post-52623293723021532392014-10-04T11:31:00.001-04:002014-10-04T11:32:39.905-04:00STYLE } October Love

My favorite beans are now on the shelves at Salt & Sundry! What's the big deal about Rancho Gordo beans? Founder Steve Sando cultivates New World heirloom varieties that pack greater depth of flavor and much better texture than the aged dried beans you often find.

For Salt & Sundry's pantry, we opted for Vaquero, Red Nightfall, Yellow Eye and good ol' garbanzos to start. I'm dreaming up earthy fall dishes to put them to good use.

A little DC connection from a 2009 New York Times article on the Rancho Gordo craze:

At the Yountville market, shoppers were lured by Sando’s boldly patterned beans, only to recoil when they realized they weren’t candied nuts, noted Sando. The French Laundry chef de cuisine Eric Ziebold (now at CityZen in Washington) brought Thomas Keller, who flipped for the Vallarta, which Sando jokingly described as “a stupid little yellow bean on the verge of extinction.” Soon everyone wanted “the Keller Bean.”

Tis the season to trot out one of my favorite summer recipes — and a mighty delicious way to turn trash into treasure.

Every now and then, I'll grant some watermelon rinds a reprieve from my Compost Cab bin and put it to good use.

Meet the pungent, sweet, tangy deliciousness that is spicy pickled watermelon rind. I think it was the ginger that really hooked me the first time I made it. No surprise there. Have I mentioned I like ginger? And the rind turns the most beautiful color, like amber jewels with a glowing translucency.

This is a quick pickle — no need for jar sterilizing and all that. Just eat it up in a few weeks and keep it covered in the fridge. I like it as a condiment on a cheese plate, with seafood, and grilled pork or chicken. You could even mince it up finer and use as a relish on sandwiches.

Spicy Pickled Watermelon Rind
adapted from Gourmet

1 medium to large watermelon
1 1/2 cups cider vinegar
1 1/2 cups water
2 cups sugar
4-5 strips of lemon peel
1/4 cup minced peeled fresh ginger
2 tablespoons minced red chile (Fresno, Thai or other)
1/2 teaspoon whole mustard seed
1 teaspoon salt

To prepare the rind, remove the the pink watermelon flesh completely for another use. Cut rind crosswise into 2-inch-wide strips and remove the green peel with a knife or Y-shaped vegetable peeler and discard. Cut the remaining white rind into 1/2-inch cubes.

In a large heavy saucepan, bring rind and remaining ingredients to a boil over moderate heat, stirring until sugar is dissolved. Reduce heat and simmer, uncovered, stirring occasionally, until rind is tender and translucent and liquid is syrupy, 45 to 55 minutes.

Allow the pickled rind to cool uncovered, and then chill in an airtight container in the fridge for up to one month.Amandahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13181434730386662275noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14187127.post-18813357619526465202014-08-01T11:27:00.000-04:002014-08-01T11:27:06.688-04:00DRINK } Hemingway Daiquiri

I'm pretty excited to have Angelika Film Center on its way to being a Salt & Sundry neighbor at Union Market. (Here's the latest in case you missed it.) I finally got a chance to see a movie (Chef, very cute) at their pop-up theater, right beside Dolcezza's new factory. It's a small sneak peek of what's to come once the full theater is built.
You can check out the details for showtimes and such here. And plan to splurge at the snack bar. I'm a sucker for interesting concessions at the movies, and though I passed on the kale chips, classic popcorn, watermelon cotton candy and a local Port City Optimal Wit made a great treat.Amandahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13181434730386662275noreply@blogger.com0
