New: La Vinoteca de Jaleo

The Crystal City outpost of Jaleo has unveiled an in-house wine shop with an impressive selection of Spanish wines. The well-known regions such as Rias Baixas, Rioja and Ribera del Duero are represented along with some rarer selections.

Prices range from $10 to $200, and if you want to purchase a bottle for a meal in the restaurant, a $15 corkage fee applies.

The Vinoteca sounds like a good idea -- so good that I took the Metro frm New Carrollton there to buy Spanish wines. Don't make the effort until further notice -- it's apparently under construction and the staff is short on awareness of the concept. So it's still in the idea stage ... a dream.

I just talked to Antoni with Vinoteca -- and he is most gracious and they are working hard to get open ... should be next weekend (NYE) if all goes well. Staff training is ongoing and this sounds like it will be a fun way to buy Spanish wines that you don't see everywhere else. So it is more than a dream ...

from Jose Andres tapas:

for the beginning:
crab-filled cherry tomatoes
manchego cheese with Catalan tomato bread

then:
lobster w/clementine and grapefruit in saffron oil

quail w/smoked bacon and lentil stew
traditional garlic shrimp

the big finish:
rack of lamb with honey allioli

for dessert -- and not from Jose:
my first sacher torte

none of Jose's dishes use butter -- I can't imagine having cooked a whole meal without using butter -- oh my, I have to wait til dessert

ENTERTAIN } For The Love Of Salt

I'm bidding a reluctant adieu to summer on this first day of fall and looking back with fond memories on one of the season's highlights — our Summer Salt Fest at the Gordy's Pickle Jar headquarters. Ever since opening Salt & Sundry three years ago, I've been dreaming of a down-home party that celebrates all things salty. With the perfect partners in crime, Sarah and Sheila of Gordy's, and my phenomenal team at Salt & Sundry, we hosted a gathering of good friends and toasted our shared love of salt. The feast included fried chicken, boiled peanuts ( made by my husband !), Rappahannock' s Olde Salt oysters, deviled eggs topped with Gordy's Sweet Pepper Relish, and probably the best fried pickles I've ever eaten (yes, I've eaten a lot) ... Gordy's Sweet Chips and Cajun Okra dipped in roasted garlic aioli. There was crisp Virginia rosé from Early Mountain Vineyards , local brews from 3 Stars and DC Brau , and a watermelon cooler tha...
