Matchbox To Open On Hill Next Year

The owners of Matchbox plan to open a second restaurant on Barracks Row in a former vending warehouse sometime next year. Co-owner Drew Kim told me in an interview for Roll Call that they plan to transform the raw space inside 521 Eighth St. SE into a new Matchbox, with the same look, vibe and menu of wood-fired pizzas and mini burgers that made the original Matchbox in Chinatown wildly popular.

He and co-owner Ty Neal both live on the Hill. "We had been looking up there for several years," Kim said. "With the new baseball stadium coming, we knew we wanted to be over there."

The second Matchbox will offer 150 seats and outdoor seating. Early plans call for neighborhood friendly features like weekend brunch and happy hour deals.

Kim says they're shooting for a late spring or early summer opening next year.

Matchbox will do so well over there.

My understanding is that DC is a very under-pizza-ed market compared to other urban places. I knew matchbox was already too close to Shaw/Logan to hope for a second location in our hood; I'm holding out hope that 2Amy's or Coppi's will set up shop. There are several spots along 9th near (notably Douglas Development's new building at 9th and N, The Exchange, which should be complete later this year) that would be perfect for such a place. . .

Don't know yet if it's *good*, but Jordan's 8 right next door is (half) a sushi place.

Hopefully the next Matchbox will be just as delicious but without rat sightings.

Jordan 8 is pretty good...worth trying - anything up market is worth supporting on the Hill. May help drive out the dollar store and the check cashing place

Technically this would be their THIRD location... last week I was at the Matchbox in Palm Springs (just as good as DC's but with more obsequious servious)

ENTERTAIN } For The Love Of Salt

I'm bidding a reluctant adieu to summer on this first day of fall and looking back with fond memories on one of the season's highlights — our Summer Salt Fest at the Gordy's Pickle Jar headquarters. Ever since opening Salt & Sundry three years ago, I've been dreaming of a down-home party that celebrates all things salty. With the perfect partners in crime, Sarah and Sheila of Gordy's, and my phenomenal team at Salt & Sundry, we hosted a gathering of good friends and toasted our shared love of salt. The feast included fried chicken, boiled peanuts ( made by my husband !), Rappahannock' s Olde Salt oysters, deviled eggs topped with Gordy's Sweet Pepper Relish, and probably the best fried pickles I've ever eaten (yes, I've eaten a lot) ...
