The Metrocurean Week in Review

What people are talking about...

Locally: Proving that people take their buttercream just as seriously as their politics in this city, the controversy I'm now calling Icing-gate '05 continues to swirl over whether Cake Love's cupcakes should be given time to warm up. Considering the comments found here, here and here, cupcakes seem to have the abililty to rouse surprisingly strong emotions. Now everyone take a deep breath...

... Rising from the ashes like Dumbledore's phoenix, Obelisk wins three stars from Tom Sietsema in his Sunday review. Several years back, the Italian restaurant was frequently touted as one of the city's top tables, but then it seemed to drop off the foodie radar. According to Tom, Obelisk is back, thanks in part to the return of chef Jerry Corso...

... OYA scores a set of new head chefs, who have given the menu some French and Asian touches...

... 14th Street's newest addition, Viridian, opens this weekend.

Nationally: Arrivederci to Vanilla Coke...

... The annual Chocolate Show sets up shop this weekend in New York City, bringing with it a chocolate fashion show (I'm guessing that's a chocolate mousse pictured), and trends like organic, single-origin and flavor-infused chocolate...

... The New York Times examines the organic milk cash cow (subsc. required).

Comments

Man, I like Vanilla Coke. I mean, it's no Cherry Coke straight from the tap, but it was... refreshing. Color me disappointed.

Maybe this would be a good place to start a discussion of where the best soda fountains are. I like the vanilla cokes at Johnny Rockets, but I'm ashamed I can't name a more, shall we say authentic soda shop. Any diners out there with flavored syrups for the soda?

Amanda - last week I left a comment regarding Komi's (lack of a) website. They actually do have one, but I can't understand why poring through 10 pages of Google results doesn't pop it up. It's www.komirestaurant.com. Enjoy!

Thanks, Katie! That's great news, even though that's about the lamest web site I've seen. =)~
Doesn't exactly communicate the fabulousness of the restaurant...

Thought you would be interested to know that Open City's first day is tomorrow (Nov 15) and it is a non-smoking establishment.

Hi there. Thought you would be interested to know that Open City opens tomorrow (Nov 15) and is non-smoking. The question remains, though would the pizza be any good because they do not have a person that works there that is experienced with making pizzas.

went to viridian last night... love the interior design, the collection of photos and the menu... but was a bit put off when upon asking for a menu was promptly informed by the bartender that "we just opened so i don't know much about the menu"...

um... training...

that said, despite the sloppy service the cauliflower soup and brussel sprouts with ginger were quite good.

i'd give it some time before i trusted it to a serious dinner though.
