Sparky's Closes

Dear Sparky's cappuccino and everything bagel with egg and cheese,

Oh, how I will miss our mornings together. You were such a good companion on days when I was too lazy to brew my own coffee or when I needed your extra caffeine boost. And how I loved the way the microwave-melted cheese smushed into the foil, so I could pick the pieces out so nothing would go to waste.

I hope that you will find another location soon, as your sign says you intend to, preferably in the same neighborhood.

Until then, I will have to drag my weary, caffeine-starved body an unbearable extra few blocks to Mocha Hut or Busboys and Poets or even Starbuck's.

Signed through my tears,

Metrocurean

OMg! I'm so sad. I took Sparky's for granted. I didn't go there often, but I loved it. I also was comforted to know it was there. I'm going to have a memorial service for it. I really hope they reopen.

Don't forget 14U as an option, too. Nice place.

not many coffee houses these days have character ... Sparky's had that "I am what I am" attitude that I found oddly endearing ... best of all they had a good cup of coffee ... a sad loss, albeit temporary, but alas many planned reopenings are unfullfilled

Thanks for the 14U reminder...I have yet to order coffee there, but will soon!

This is what happens when you double, or even triple, the property taxes on businesses. Lucky for Ben's Chili Bowl, they got an exemption from the increase (their taxes went from $300k in 2005 to $1.2 MILLION in 2006). Not so lucky for Sparkys. You gotta sell A LOT of coffee and halfsmokes to meet those kinda expenses.

I am so sad. Sparky's has kept me sane during job hunts, work weekends, language study, you name it, all the while supplying good coffee and music, served by down-to-earth staff. 14U is fine, except so far it's staff has been downright snarky every time and there are no real surfaces to put a book or computer or newspaper on.

What is it with rising costs in this town?! Who can afford these levels? Makes me yearn for the days when 14th and U was nice and dodgy and State of the Union was still stating the Union...

I know... I'm still extremely bummed.

I have loved Sparky's from the time I walked through there doors, and miss them all of the time. Not mention they have the best coffee in town!

Stay tuned next week to find out what's replacing it...

Are they really still reopening? Does anyone know any details? My Sparky's-addicted cells are hurting.
