Taylor Gourmet To Open On H Street NE

Deli fans who bemoan the lack of great sandwich spots in the District should set their sights on Taylor Gourmet, an Italian gourmet deli and market slated to open at 1116 H St. NE this month.

Owners Casey Patten and David Mazza grew up around Philadelphia, and when they moved to DC in 2003, the plan for Taylor was born after they realized there weren't any great gourmet Italian markets in the area, Patten says. (Taylor is his middle name.)

The retail part of Taylor will offer meats, wine, beer, cheeses, olive oils, vinegars, pastas, fresh sauces and more. All the breads will be shipped from Philadelphia's historic Sarcone's Bakery. "If you have a deli in Philadelphia and want any kind of credibility, you use Sarcone's," Patten says.

A 27-seat, counter-service restaurant will dish up sandwiches and hoagies named after streets in Philadelphia and salads named after the city's parks. Take the Race Street, for example, made with Taylor's house-roasted turkey, prosciutto, mozzarella and pesto. Sides include Rocky's risotto balls and Navy Yard fries with garlic and parsley.

The shop will offer delivery for both retail items and deli orders.

DC-based design firm Grupo7 (Mio, Mate, kstreet lounge) has given the 1,200-square-foot space an urban industrial feel with garage-sized stainless steel and glass doors, reclaimed wood, tin and exposed brick elements.

Look for Taylor to open in about two weeks.

Boo... there goes my dream of one day opening an "Italian Store II" in DC. I regularly drive to Falls Church for an experience it sounds like Taylor Gourmet will bring to DC. I just wish it wasn't so far downtown though I'm sure those that work there are ecstatic.

Drew - if you're heading to Falls Church for the "Italian Store" experience, you're missing out on the authentic version - A. Litteri. Located on Morse St., in the warehouse district just north of H Street, NE, Litteri has been doing deli sandwiches, cold cuts, pastas, wines, etc. for roughly 80 years now.

We live on H Street and have been eagerly awaiting Taylor...it'll be interesting to see if it complements Litteri or competes.

Sweet. That's around the corner from Horace & Dickies and down the street from Philadelphia Water Ice Company. So you can get a decent Philly cheesesteak, Italian hoagies, AND fried fish sandwiches all in the same two block radius.

@drew - The Italian Store is in Arlington not Falls Church. In fact it's not even remotely close to the Arlington / Falls Church border either...

The location is not accessible by Metro but is very convenient to the GW Parkway.

Uh ... hello? A. Litteri's is like 2 minutes away.

The more decent places, the merrier. Besides, Mangialardo's (also nearby) beats the heck out of Litteri and the Italian Store for Italian subs.
