James Beard Finalists Announced

The DC area represented well on Monday when the James Beard Foundation announced the nominees for its prestigious national awards. The chef winners will be announced May 3.

Up for restaurant and chef awards are:

• Best Chef Mid-Atlantic: Cathal Armstrong of Restaurant Eve, Peter Pastan of Obelisk, Bryan Voltaggio of Volt

• Outstanding Chef: José Andrés of Minibar

• Rising Star Chef of the Year: Johnny Monis of Komi

• Outstanding Pastry Chef: Amanda Cook of CityZen

From the kitchen to the print world, chef David Guas received a nod for his new cookbook "DamGoodSweet: Desserts to Satisfy Your Sweet Tooth, New Orleans Style."

Tim Carman of the City Paper is nominated for feature writing for his column “How Not to Hire a Chef.” The Washington Post gets a nod for best newspaper food section. The Kojo Nnamdi Show is nominated for radio show, and locally based producers Heidi Hanson and Chris Warner are nominated for their "Chefs A’ Field" show.

I have a copy of DamGoodSweet. Just made the red velvet cake - it was phenomenal. Great cookbook.

Locally produced "Chefs A' Field" was also nominated in the category best "Broadcast Television Show, On Location".
