Mid City Caffe Coming To 14th Street

Mid-City Cafe will open over Miss Pixie's

Since Sparky's served its last espresso nearly two years ago, I've been hurting for some good coffee in my neighborhood. Thankfully, that's about to change.

Mid City Caffe is slated to open in April, just above Miss Pixie's at 1626 14th St. NW. The shop will serve Counter Culture Coffee (hooray!), and Mick Mier, one of the owners, promises there won't be any stale drip coffee sitting around. Coffee will be made fresh by either french press or pour over method. There will also be espresso, cappuccinos and pastries.

You may recognize Mier's name — he's one of 1905's owners and the designer responsible for its funky turn-of-the-century look. He's designing the space for Mid City Caffe, so expect a cool vibe to go with your cup of coffee.

cool to hear, but wow, what a boring name.

Fantastic news! It's just what the stretch needs. One more reason to stop by Miss Pixie's, too!

Wonderful. Not only do I get a coffee shop ten steps from my doorway, but maybe this will finally shut up those tiresome hipsters who denigrate Cork because they miss the indie snarl of Sparky's, which was a small, cramped, crappy coffeehouse to begin with.

I am really crossing my fingers for free wireless. I would love to frequent a local shop that will be even closer to home than Caribou

great news!! and such a cool spot!

What's "tiresome" about missing Sparky's? I'm a million miles from being a hipster--and I have no beef with Cork,--but I liked that place. "Indie snarl"?

The name isn't crucial one way or another, but it is kind of boring.

I hope they do well.

IS this a cool spot? Above Pixies, next to an auto shop, across from a vacant lot?? Eesh.

I lived at 14th & Corcoran for 13 years and always felt this stretch was bleak, bleak, bleak. And it still is...

I'm interested in knowing what the hours will be. If they're a late night kitchen place, then that will be very cool. If not...you could always go somewhere else if you don't live in the immediate vicinity. I'm just tired of being forced to go to The Diner because nothing else is open for sit-down, decent food.

Dontcha think that coat of hot pink paint makes the block a little less bleak?

Regardless of the fact that no single block of 14th btn P and U is completely filled in with vibrancy, that stretch overall is one of the best in the city when it comes to neighborhood restaurants and independent shops. And Pixie's + Mid-City + the restaurant coming to 100% Mexico (helmed by Barton Seaver) all make for exciting additions to the block and a half.

The car lot and the shelter undo the pink for me, I think. Not to mention the oddity that is the sex club to the left of the gym.

What's coming to 100% Mexico? It's been 100% empty despite the rumblings I've heard...

Seaver is coming back? I thought he was going to Glover Park?
Amanda said…
He's involved with both restaurants. More details to come...

$4.75 for a piece of coffee cake??? wtf??? Why do things have to be so expensive to be "cool"??? Great disappointment. Won't go back.

You cheapass. Their pastries and cakes are from local vendors and they are homemade. That spice cake is to die for! I would rather pay $4.75 for a slice of that coffee cake than a processed, preservative-laden one from the grocery store.
