This is not the first time I've heard that Mangialardo's is good. I live a block away, but have never been there, thanks to the hours that seem tailor-made only for the construction workers building Jenkins Row next door. Maybe once Jenkins Row is done, there will be enough of a clientele to keep it open past 3:30 on weekdays or -- gasp -- on a Saturday.

Mangialardo's used to be just a little Italian grocery back in the 1950s, back when there actually were Italian stonemasons working downtown. The sandwiches were an afterthought; now it's the reverse: they make all their money on the sandwiches. It's always been a breakfast/lunch sorta place. Can't imagine what they'd sell for dinner items. Pizza maybe? But I hear you. I feel the same way about Deli City: only open during the week for breakfast and lunch and closed on the weekends.

There's a rumor they'll open on the weekends once the condos open up. If you're ever there on a day off, you'll find the place jumping. I'm only there once in a blue moon but at lunch time people are double parked. There are police from nearly every type of police force in the city, utility workers - it seems like anyone who might be driving by stops in. The sandwiches are good.
