Equinox Spikes The Cider

Now that there's an official nip in the fall air, it's time to spike the cider.

Equinox kicks off its Hard Cider Hour this evening from 5-7 p.m. The deal, featuring cider cocktails, free samples of hot spiced cider and free snacks, will run each Tuesday through Dec. 4.

Chef and owner Todd Gray will dish out complimentary venison chili, caramelized onion and fig flatbread, sweet potato potstickers and pumpkin fritters.

And for the hard stuff, featured cocktails include the Apple Pillar made with Laird’s Applejack, fresh cider, lemon and orange juices and maple syrup ($10), the Pumpkin Cobbler with cinnamon-infused rum, Laird’s Applejack, hot cider and pumpkin spice liqueur ($10), Falling Leaves with vanilla-infused rum, fresh cider, lemongrass-infused simple syrup, mint and a Laird’s Applejack splash ($11), and the Brown Mary, mixed with pepper-infused rum, cider, Laird’s Applejack, fresh lemon juice and orange bitters ($11).

No reservations needed.

Amanda, I called Equinox yesterday and they said Cider Hour was only last week, October 30.

Went last night (11/6) and there was no Cider Hour. Also drinks were more like $15 a pop with extremely slow service and few appetizer samplers

I checked in with co-owner Ellen Gray, and she sends along this message:

Cider Hour is running through December. There were at least 35 people here last night. As for $15.00 drinks - I looked through all receipts - if you call me 202-331-8118 I will look into your check. As for food - we sent out 12 very large bowls (enough for 5) of chips, 15 cups of chili - enough for 30ppl, 60 truffled risotto fritters, 35 mini grilled cheese sandwhiches as well as 25 mini veggie wraps. The kitchen has been sending lots of different food every week to offer a variety. We have gotten tons of compliments. Hope to see you again and you let me know about your bill. Thanks Ellen

I went because of the combo drink specials/and appetizer tastes listed. The host made the comment that she was surprised how many people showed up. THe Falling Leaves drink was amazing--tart but sweet at the same time, and the bar service was friendly, drinks at $13. However, the individuals who got the free tastes were certainly the large groups of friends that were standing together. The smaller groups and couples didn't seem to be approached with the food. I didn't want to be pushy and ask, but it felt less organized than I imagined. It was more of a special drink option for most of the people we saw there. I loved the cider drinks, though.

ENTERTAIN } For The Love Of Salt

I'm bidding a reluctant adieu to summer on this first day of fall and looking back with fond memories on one of the season's highlights — our Summer Salt Fest at the Gordy's Pickle Jar headquarters. Ever since opening Salt & Sundry three years ago, I've been dreaming of a down-home party that celebrates all things salty. With the perfect partners in crime, Sarah and Sheila of Gordy's, and my phenomenal team at Salt & Sundry, we hosted a gathering of good friends and toasted our shared love of salt. The feast included fried chicken, boiled peanuts ( made by my husband !), Rappahannock' s Olde Salt oysters, deviled eggs topped with Gordy's Sweet Pepper Relish, and probably the best fried pickles I've ever eaten (yes, I've eaten a lot) ...
