Last Weekend For Two Farmers Markets

Get your grass-fed turkey, apple pies, honey, old fashioned sweet potatoes, bread pudding, chestnuts, walnuts, an array of greens and more at the final day of the 14 & U Farmers Market, right now, til 1 p.m.! It's basically a one-stop Thanksgiving dinner shop, and your last chance to visit the market for the season.

Also bowing out for the winter season is the Bloomingdale farmers market, which has its last day Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at First and R Streets NW, next to the Big Bear Cafe.

We will have Sweet Potato Pie, greens, cauliflower, brussels sprouts, broccoli, potatoes, Breadline stuffing, pork and lamb sausages, salads at Bloomingdale as well....

No turkeys but terrific lamb and pork. My mother always cooked up a baked ham as well as a turkey....Robin

Mmmm. Thank goodness for Dupont's market. I'm spoiled that the second-closest market to me is year-round. I think it's my favorite part of living in DC.

Perhaps as farmers markets become more popular and people realize the importance of supporting them, more markets will try to go year-round...?

It is really a question of people be willing to come out in the cold and rain and snow. Dupont is a huge market in the season but it only gets 10 to 20 percent of their September crowd in the winter. A small market would not have enough customers in the winter....unless people get VERY committed.

ENTERTAIN } For The Love Of Salt

I'm bidding a reluctant adieu to summer on this first day of fall and looking back with fond memories on one of the season's highlights — our Summer Salt Fest at the Gordy's Pickle Jar headquarters. Ever since opening Salt & Sundry three years ago, I've been dreaming of a down-home party that celebrates all things salty. With the perfect partners in crime, Sarah and Sheila of Gordy's, and my phenomenal team at Salt & Sundry, we hosted a gathering of good friends and toasted our shared love of salt. The feast included fried chicken, boiled peanuts ( made by my husband !), Rappahannock' s Olde Salt oysters, deviled eggs topped with Gordy's Sweet Pepper Relish, and probably the best fried pickles I've ever eaten (yes, I've eaten a lot) ...
