Looking For A Flame Fix

I miss the fireplace in my old living room so much it hurts. Particularly in my toes, which get really cold when the lame forced air heat in my place shuts off. So I have to look elsewhere for my flame fix.

By far my favorite fireplace in the city is the one in the Tabard Inn's sitting room. When it comes to old school romance, you can't beat 1789's main dining room, with a crackling fire (pictured above). Sonoma's upstairs lounge is another favorite of mine.

The most stylish fireplace in town has to be Oya's. The long line of fire, inset in a giant white marble wall, may be more for show than actual warmth, but you still get a cozy vibe seated near it.

I like Polly's because they have such a nice mix of wood. It smells lovely.

I'm also a fan of Al Tiramisu's.
Is Equinox also getting one?

My boyfriend and I went to Tabard for hot buttered rums by the fireplace on Monday night. Had the service been a little friendlier we would probably make it a regular spot. Perhaps we'll try the Ritz in Georgetown next time.

Downstairs at Brickskeller used to light their fire in the window, but that was back when they actually had your first choice of beer. Now you're lucky if they have your fifth choice.

Hey now, I worked at the Brickskeller for a short stint in 2000. Can you imagine what a bitch it is for the servers, looking up the skus for all those beers only to have to go back to the table 5 times when they are out? Ah, fond memories.

Let's get one thing straight--a real fireplace burns wood, not gas. Real charm, warmth, and atmosphere comes from fireplaces like the ones at the Ritz, Tabard Inn, 18th St. Lounge, etc.

I'm bidding a reluctant adieu to summer on this first day of fall and looking back with fond memories on one of the season's highlights — our Summer Salt Fest at the Gordy's Pickle Jar headquarters. Ever since opening Salt & Sundry three years ago, I've been dreaming of a down-home party that celebrates all things salty. STYLE } Bar Styling Tips with Framebridge

  I've always been noncommittal when it come to putting anything on my walls. Art? Photos? Prints? But what if I change my mind? Add the hassle of framing something and voila, a growing pile of unframed prints and photos gathers dust on a shelf. So I much appreciated a recent gentle nudge from friends at  Framebridge , a DC-based company that's making it easier and less expensive to get those pretty-if-neglected pieces framed and on display. We hung out at my place, whipped up some Green Hat gin and tonics, and I shared tips for stocking and styling your bar at home. (Any old table will do!) Hello Cupcake Opens

Cupcakes await the first customers at Hello Cupcake For a sweet spot in this final week of August, head to Hello Cupcake , which opens at 10 a.m. today at 1351 Connecticut Ave. NW. I had the chance to sample a few flavors with owner Penny Karas. The fluffy icing on the peanut butter blossom (above) is seriously addictive, and the seasonal root beer flavor is a delightful surprise with spicy root beer cake topped with vanilla cream cheese frosting.
