Colorado Kitchen Closing

When someone posted a link to an auction for Colorado Kitchen's goods on Chowhound Tuesday, it didn't bode well for the restaurant.

Washingtonian's Todd Kliman continued the breaking news flurry Wednesday with confirmation from Colorado Kitchen chef/owner Gillian Clark that the restaurant's days are numbered. (DonRockwell.com says June 29 is the final service.)

The restaurant's current building is reportedly slated for demolition.

That makes two restaurants down and one chef out so far this week. Here's hoping for better news next week.

I just called and they said they are indeed closing, but that Sunday may not be the date. Uggg.

Bad news comes in threes. I think this may be the end of it for a while.

At least there's word of her opening a new place in Silver Spring.

There's also going to be a new place in Takoma Park on Carroll Avenue. Both the "Avenue Oven" (in Takoma) and the "General Store" (in Forest Glen) are planned to open in the Fall/Winter, although you never know with restaurants.

Thanks, dc foodie. And you're right about that last bit. I always tack 6 mos. onto restaurant opening estimates.

STYLE } Bar Styling Tips with Framebridge

  I've always been noncommittal when it come to putting anything on my walls. Art? Photos? Prints? But what if I change my mind? Add the hassle of framing something and voila, a growing pile of unframed prints and photos gathers dust on a shelf. So I much appreciated a recent gentle nudge from friends at  Framebridge , a DC-based company that's making it easier and less expensive to get those pretty-if-neglected pieces framed and on display. We hung out at my place, whipped up some Green Hat gin and tonics, and I shared tips for stocking and styling your bar at home. (Any old table will do!) Hello Cupcake Opens

Cupcakes await the first customers at Hello Cupcake For a sweet spot in this final week of August, head to Hello Cupcake , which opens at 10 a.m. today at 1351 Connecticut Ave. NW. I had the chance to sample a few flavors with owner Penny Karas. The fluffy icing on the peanut butter blossom (above) is seriously addictive, and the seasonal root beer flavor is a delightful surprise with spicy root beer cake topped with vanilla cream cheese frosting.
