Where To Find Fish Tacos?

Taqueria Nacional fish taco

A Metrocurean reader writes in search of the best fish tacos in town. DC being a long way from Baja, it seems the options are a little limited. But perhaps you can prove me wrong in the comments.

I like Taqueria Nacional, whose fish taco is pictured above. Ceiba serves a Baja-style version at lunch and on its bar menu. Where else can you find good fish tacos?

Tortilla Coast in Capitol Hill has a GREAT baja fish taco with a nice tomatilla sauce. I get extra sides of pico & guac, and the black beans side is the perfect compliment. For my family, a visit to DC is incomplete without an order of these. :)

There's nothing wrong with the ones at Baja Fresh, despite its evil-chain-itude.

Bill - They do them fried, right?

I like fried fish over grilled or pan-seared in tacos. Better texture.

The Argonaut on H. St. has good ones.

I can tell you where to NOT get fish tacos--Hank's Oyster Bar. They were not fried, really just did not taste good. I was very disappointed.

I can second the fish tacos at the Argonaut. Best enjoyed during their Wednesday night "Booze Clues" trivia evenings.

And we just wrote about Taqueria Nacional today! Haven't tried the fish tacos yet, but they come highly recommended.

Seeing capital spice's photo ... Unless I'm losing my mind, Taqueria Nacional(e) changed the spelling of their name??!! See old photo here.

When I wrote about it last year, a commenter pointed out that they might have it wrong. I guess they fixed it?

Did they scratch the 'e' off the sign?

What about that new place Surfside in Glover Park? I haven't been, but I think fish tacos will be an important part of their menu.

The Reef in Adams Morgan has good tacos with tilapia - added bonus is that they only buy certified sustainable seafood.

Taqueria Poblano in Del Ray Alexandria has fantastic fish tacos.

I third Argonaut (3 large fried fish tacos, guacamole only OK but the sauce was good), but disagree that they're best enjoyed on Wednesdays during Booze Clues. They're best enjoyed on Tuesdays, when they come with a free West Coast IPA.

If they come with a free IPA on Tuesday, then I'll definitely defer to anonymous's suggestion!

Amanda - you're absolutely right. Taqueria Nacional HAS changed their name and their signage to reflect the accurate spelling.

I actually had a little geek-out moment at the end of the post where I point out the old spelling in the picture you used in your review last year and talk about the change. Thanks!

I had the fish tacos at Surfside and rate them very high. The tilapia was cooked perfectly, and the toppings- avocado, cilanro, and sour-cream based salsa- were all fresh and complimented the fish perfectly. They are served in two corn tortillas, which is a smart move by the chef as corn tortillas tend to crack and break. Highly recommended.

I hope this isn't blasphemous for fish taco afficianados, but I like the ones that California Tortilla offers in the summer. Blackened with a tangy slaw and some pico. Two are very filling.
