Trends: Sunday Supper Alive And Well

Westend Bistro recently launched a Sunday supper

While good ol' fashioned Sunday suppers may not be so common in American homes anymore, a growing number of restaurants are keeping nostalgia alive with their own spins on the traditional family meal.

Westend Bistro is the latest restaurant to get in on the trend with its weekly Sunday supper, a family-style meal featuring an appetizer, entree and sides for $28 per person. The menu will change monthly — this month it's Cornish game hens with spoonbread, a vegetable casserole and salmon rillette. "The informality of this menu allows us to change our offerings as new produce floods area farmers markets throughout the spring," says Westend chef Joe Palma.

CommonWealth's Sunday roast follows the British tradition and kicks off at 1 p.m. Guests are served platters of roasted meats along with sides of seasonal vegetables for around $20 per person.

In Alexandria, the Majestic serves Nana's Sunday dinner each week from 1 to 9 p.m. The menu, which costs $78 for a table of four and $25 for each additional guest, changes monthly. The March menu features an Irish-themed dinner of roasted leg of lamb, mixed greens, a navarin of carrots, peas, onions, turnips and mint, pommes boulangere and Irish rice pudding for dessert.

An addition: Bastille in Alexandria does Sunday dinner prix fixe from 5-8 p.m. Three courses for $27.

STYLE } Bar Styling Tips with Framebridge

  I've always been noncommittal when it come to putting anything on my walls. Art? Photos? Prints? But what if I change my mind? Add the hassle of framing something and voila, a growing pile of unframed prints and photos gathers dust on a shelf. So I much appreciated a recent gentle nudge from friends at  Framebridge , a DC-based company that's making it easier and less expensive to get those pretty-if-neglected pieces framed and on display. Hello Cupcake Opens

Cupcakes await the first customers at Hello Cupcake For a sweet spot in this final week of August, head to Hello Cupcake , which opens at 10 a.m. today at 1351 Connecticut Ave. NW. I had the chance to sample a few flavors with owner Penny Karas. The fluffy icing on the peanut butter blossom (above) is seriously addictive, and the seasonal root beer flavor is a delightful surprise with spicy root beer cake topped with vanilla cream cheese frosting.
