This afternoon at a ceremony complete with fragrant incense, pounding drums and a dancing dragon, the soon-to-open Buddha-Bar's 18-foot, onyx-glazed Buddha was blessed. The statue traveled some 10,000 miles from Indonesia to grace the main dining room of the new pan-Asian restaurant, slated to open May 10 at 455 Massachusetts Ave. Here's a peek inside the new space:

space looks great, actually pretty different from the Buddha Bar in Paris, more modern, but a little less dramatic I guess...

Hello new pretentious place in DC! Maybe this means I can try to get onto the W roof without the snooty ones there?

The use of Buddha makes me a little uncomfortable. It would not surprise if it generates some discussion in DC's international community. This is not a new issue for this string of restaurants and the owners may have calculated that any fallout will be manageable if not helpful. But all that said, the use of Buddha in this context is disquieting and I'm not religious.

Finally! A bit of sex comes to DC.

Anonymous at 8:53, does the use of shrines to the Virgin Mary in pizzerias also make you uncomfortable? It's not like they're asking you to eat sushi off the Buddha's naked belly.

Pray to Buddha that this building gets filled up!

The Buddha Bar in Paris is more of a lounge than restaurant with dim lighting and a chill atmosphere. It'll be interesting to see how they manage to transition between an enormous dining room and a chic late night spot.
